Showcases a diverse array of recent installations, sculptural objects, photographs, performance pieces, paintings and other works by more than 100 artists, among them such established figures as Anselm Kiefer, Jochen Gerz, Ken Lum, Haim Steinbach, Giulio Paolini, Helen Chadwick, Ashley Bickerton and Lorna Simpson as well as many emerging artists from Australia, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe. Illustrations and brief individual discussions of the featured works are prefaced by five theoretical essays which include an analysis of Latin American art in the light of Levi-Strauss's theory of bricolage, discussions of the integrative strategies employed by artists in marginalized cultures, and an examination of the significance of the border as a political, social and aesthetic construct.
