Surveying the oeuvre of a once-celebrated German Impressionist painter whose achievements have been overshadowed by those of his colleagues Liebermann, Slevogt and Corinth, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of 75 paintings produced by Kuehl from the early 1870s to 1913, among them luminous cityscapes and renderings of domestic scenes and ecclesiastical interiors. A detailed biographical chronology and a catalogue raisonne of more than 700 paintings and drawings by Kuehl augment eight essays examining such topics as the artist's stature among the German Impressionists, his depictions of urban life in northern Germany, and his activities as a painter and teacher in Dresden during the last two decades of his career.
