COMMON GROUND/UNCOMMON VISION: THE MICHAEL AND JULIE HALL COLLECTION OF AMERICAN FOLK ART IN THE MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM. Milwaukee Art Museum, 1993. 338 pp. with 281 ills. (91 col.). 30 x 24 cm. LC 93-9542 ISBN 0944110436 In English.
Showcasing a major private collection of American folk art recently acquired by the Museum, this catalogue features illustrations and discussions of more than 200 works that include decoys, whirligigs, walking sticks and other traditional craft objects as well as individualistic sculptures, paintings and drawings produced by 19th- and 20th-century folk artists, among them such well-known figures as Erastus Salisbury Field, William Edmondson, Elijah Pierce, Edgar Tolson, Bill Traylor, Gertrude Morgan and Howard Finster. Interviews with the collectors and biographical profiles of the featured artists augment four insightful essays that explore aspects of the ongoing controversy among art and cultural historians over the definition and interpretation of folk art.
