An extensive review of the flourishing of avant-garde art in Czechoslovakia during the interwar period, this substantial catalogue presents an array of more than 500 paintings and drawings, architectural designs, photographs and photomontages, posters and diverse decorative works by some 100 artists and architects, among them Karel Teige, Frantisek Kupka, Josef Sudek, Toyen (Marie Cerminova) and Jaromir Krejcar. Augmented by profiles of the featured artists and their avant-garde organizations and by a detailed cultural chronology of the period, ten essays discuss such topics as the distinctive qualities of Czech Functionalist architecture; the fusion of Russian Constructivist principles and romantic imagery in the "picture poems" produced by members of the influential Devetsil group; the pioneering abstract photography of Jaromir Funke and Jaroslav Rossler; and the conflict between the Functionalist and Surrealist movements in the 1930s.
