Documenting two complementary exhibitions surveying the career of prominent British painter Davie (b. 1920), this catalogue features fine color reproductions of 31 oils and 17 gouaches produced from 1945 to 1992, most incorporating fantastic archetypal forms and symbols that reflect the artist's interest in Zen Buddhism and ancient myths. Includes a well-illustrated checklist of the 156 exhibited works, extensive excerpts from Davie's previously unpublished travel journal of 1948-49, and two critical essays that discuss the multicultural sources of the artist's imagery and the spiritual dimensions of his oeuvre.
