OP MARINA ABRAMOVIC. Ed. by Friedrich Meschede. Neue Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin-Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin, 1993. Published by Edition Cantz, Stuttgart. 312 pp. with 200 ills. (7 col.). 31 x 25 cm. LC 93-158288 ISBN 3893225374 Bilingual in German and English.
A substantial overview of avant-garde works by prominent Yugoslav-born artist Abramovic (b. 1946), many produced during her collaboration from 1976 to 1988 with German-born artist Ulay (b. 1943), this catalogue features extensive photographic documentation of some 40 body art performances and participatory installations dating from 1973 to 1993, including numerous experimental pieces exploring the effects of prolonged physical and mental stress on personal identity and the perception of reality. Augmented by Abramovic's concise descriptions of the featured performances and installations, two critical essays illuminate the political, philosophical and spiritual concerns of the artist and evaluate the significance of individual works.
