This well-illustrated volume surveys the great tradition of Russian metalworking through a presentation of 215 outstanding pieces from the collection of the National Historical Museum in Moscow, including icons and reliquaries inlaid with precious stones, censors, chalices and other ecclesiastical objects, and jewelry, pitchers, enameled boxes, trays and other works ranging in date from the 11th to the early 20th century. Excellent reproductions and careful descriptions of the featured works are arranged in nine chronological sections, each accompanied by two essays summarizing the cultural history of the period and examining concurrent developments in metalworking styles and techniques.
