ERNEST MEISSONIER: RETROSPECTIVE. Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lyon, 1993. Published in association with Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 272 pp. with 312 ills. (72 col.). 30 x 24 cm. LC 93-155419 ISBN 2711827399 In French.
Reexamining the achievements of French painter Meissonier (1815-1891), a once-celebrated artist whose detailed depictions of historical military subjects and narrative genre scenes have been largely dismissed by modern critics, this well-illustrated catalogue documents a broad selection of some 150 paintings, drawings, watercolors and small-scale bronzes, including landscapes and portraits along with many of the artist's well-known images of the Napoleonic campaigns. Fifteen scholarly texts discuss Meissonier's principal themes and address such topics as the critical reception accorded his work during his long career, his patronage by major 19th-century collectors, and the circumstances surrounding the creation of his famous painting 1807, Friedland (1875).
