A detailed reappraisal of the often overlooked accomplishments of professional Chinese painters of the 15th and early 16th centuries, this scholarly catalogue documents 110 landscapes, figure studies, bird and flower compositions, and depictions of genre scenes by more than 40 artists, including court painters and figures associated with the so-called Zhe School. Fine color reproductions of the exhibited paintings and illustrations of numerous related works accompany an extensive four-part text that describes the institutions of court patronage during the period, discusses the function and distinctive styles of Ming painting, and closely examines the oeuvres of several of the featured artists.
