An ambitious review of the artistic and cultural issues central to the Surrealist movement, this well-illustrated catalogue features a diverse selection of nearly 300 paintings, collages, photographs, drawings, prints and sculptural objects drawn from public and private collections around the world, including works produced from 1913 through the 1940s by Duchamp, Masson, de Chirico, Ernst, Magritte, Dali, Picasso, Cornell, Man Ray and some 40 other European and American artists as well as by such prominent Australian figures as Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Russell Drysdale, James Gleeson and Peter Purves Smith. An introductory review of Surrealism comprising detailed analyses of 22 of the exhibited works is accompanied by a lengthy discussion of the movement's impact in Australia and nine essays addressing such topics as the role of the city as a source of materials and imagery for the Surrealists, their interpretations of Freud's theories and explorations of sexual themes, and their extensive use of collage techniques and photography.
