Accompanying an exhibition of more than 450 works drawn from the vast collection formed by Louisine (1855-1929) and H.O. Havemeyer (1847-1907), this catalogue documents a selection of decorative pieces dating from antiquity through the 19th century; a group of Asian ceramics, paintings and other objects; and an impressive array of European paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, among them numerous compositions by major French Impressionist artists and their precursors as well as canvases by such Spanish, Dutch and Italian masters as El Greco, Goya, Rembrandt and Veronese. In addition to a lengthy biographical chronology detailing the Havemeyers' acquisition of individual works and an extensively illustrated checklist of the 525 Western paintings, watercolors and drawings in the collection, the volume includes five essays discussing the couple's collecting interests, the interior decoration of their New York mansion, and the role of Louisine Havemeyer in a 1915 exhibition mounted in support of the woman suffrage movement.
