Fifteen illustrated essays include descriptions of the political, social and economic history of the vast empire ruled by the Sassanians; discussions of their achievements in architecture, mosaic and stucco ornamentation, large-scale relief sculpture and other art forms; and an examination of the culture's influence on both Occidental and Oriental art.
