Presents some 50 photographic compositions produced from 1978 to 1992 by noted African American artist Weems (b. 1953), including documentary pictures of her family, staged images of domestic scenes, tinted portraits, and ironic still lifes, many of the works incorporating provocative phrases or narrative texts. Two critical essays discuss the integration of personal and political perspectives in Weems's oeuvre and examine in detail the racial and gender-related themes explored in specific works.
