Examining a significant aspect of the oeuvre of Honore Daumier that has often been overshadowed by his celebrated satirical lithographs, this catalogue features reproductions and individual analyses of some 120 drawings and watercolors spanning the career of the French artist (1808-1879), including portrait and figure studies, interpretations of historical and literary subjects, depictions of domestic scenes and city life, and portrayals of lawyers and street performers. Five well-illustrated essays discussing Daumier's expressive style, his complex iconography and other facets of his draughtsmanship are followed by an eight-part thematic presentation of the exhibited works, each section prefaced by a concise critical text.
