GENOVES. Institut Valencia d'Art Modern, Centre Julio Gonzalez, Valencia, 1992. 154 pp. with 87 ills. (86 col.). 31 x 26 cm. ISBN 8478909893 Trilingual in Catalan, Spanish and English (brief entries in Catalan only).
Presents fine reproductions of some 80 paintings produced from 1965 to 1992 by prominent Spanish artist Juan Genoves (b. 1930), surveying a politically engaged oeuvre composed primarily of monochromatic studies of silhouetted individual figures and anonymous crowds in scenes of violent oppression. Three critical essays discuss Genoves's leading role in the revival of the Spanish avant garde in the 1950s and 60s, evaluate the objective, often photographic qualities of his imagery, and describe the evolution of his social and political concerns.
