Documenting a reduced version of the Cologne exhibition Von Bruegel bis Rubens: Das goldene Jahrhundert der flamischen Malerei (Worldwide 23851), this catalogue features excellent full-page reproductions and scholarly descriptions of 144 paintings (including 19 works not presented in the German show) produced by some 80 artists active in Antwerp during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Seven essays (six of them not published in the Cologne catalogue) trace the evolution of the Antwerp School and discuss major themes explored by Jan Brueghel the Elder, Van Dyck, Frans Francken II, Jordaens and other Flemish artists of the period, surveying their approaches to historical and genre subjects, portraiture, and still life and landscape painting.
