Examining the specialized genre of quadratura painting, which was dominated by Bolognese artists of the 17th and 18th centuries, this catalogue presents detailed documentation of more than 100 illusionistic architectural murals designed for private and public buildings in Bologna, Parma, Modena and other Emilian cities by such artists as Angelo Michele Colonna, Agostino Mitelli, Antonio Basoli, and Ferdinando and Francesco Bibiena. Preparatory studies, drawings and photographs of the featured works are accompanied by individual commentaries, biographies of the artists, and twelve essays that include discussions of the origins and primary forms of quadratura painting, the contributions of Basoli and the Bibiena family to its development, and the curriculum of the Accademia Clementina in Bologna during the 18th century.
