Providing an extensive review of the stylistic and thematic progression of de Chirico's work from his pioneering Metaphysical compositions of the 1910s and 20s to the enigmatic studies of figures and interiors he produced late in his career, this catalogue showcases 115 paintings by the renowned Italian artist (1888-1978) as well as a selection of some 130 drawings, lithographs and designs for the theater. Prefaced by four critical essays discussing the artistic and philosophical issues central to de Chirico's oeuvre, good color reproductions of the featured paintings are accompanied by five texts summarizing the principal stages of the artist's career.
