Documenting a notable selection of rarely or never before exhibited works drawn primarily from provincial Russian museums, this catalogue features full-page color reproductions of some 85 paintings by Larionov, Goncharova, Malevich, Popova, Rodchenko, Kandinsky and more than 25 other major and lesser-known artists. Commentaries on many of the works and a chronology of exhibitions and art-related events in Russia from 1906 to 1926 augment three scholarly essays discussing the aesthetic and political influences on the development of the Russian avant garde, the contributions of key individual painters to its evolution, and the government program established in the aftermath of the 1917 Revolution to promote progressive art by disseminating avant-garde works to regional museums.
