Examines in detail a celebrated 17th-century collection of Classical marble statuary, presenting full-page multiple views and substantial discussions of 26 sculptures (chiefly portrayals of mythological figures) assembled in Rome by Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi and restored under the supervision of renowned Baroque sculptors Alessandro Algardi (1598-1654) and Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Three well-illustrated essays discussing the history of the collection and tracing its influence on Poussin, Velazquez, Batoni, Winckelmann and other artists and scholars through the 19th century are supplemented by two texts describing 17th-century and modern approaches to the restoration of marble sculpture.
