A major reappraisal of Bassano's contributions to 16th-century Venetian painting, this massive catalogue features excellent full-page reproductions and detailed examinations of 88 paintings and 35 drawings spanning the artist's career, including genre scenes, portraits, figure studies and depictions of biblical subjects that illustrate his innovative style and his pioneering use of secular imagery in his treatments of traditional religious themes. Five substantial scholarly essays include a lengthy evaluation of Bassano's oeuvre and the output of his family workshop as well as discussions of such topics as the artist's achievements as a fresco painter and analyses of his pictorial techniques in the writings of Ridolfi, Boschini, Volpato and other critics of the 16th to the 18th century.
