Accompanying a major exhibition exploring the multifaceted oeuvre of Belgian designer, architect and painter Van de Velde (1863-1957), a leading proponent of the Art Nouveau style and an influential member of the Deutscher Werkbund, this catalogue documents a vast array of furniture, ceramics, textiles and other decorative works along with examples of the artist's Neo-Impressionist paintings and of notable architectural and interior designs that illustrate his central role in the aesthetic debates of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An extensive biographical chronology prefaces 17 well-illustrated essays which thoroughly examine Van de Velde's life and work in Belgium, Germany and Holland, addressing such topics as the artist's acclaimed interior designs for Siegfried Bing's Art Nouveau gallery in Paris (1895), his tenure as director of the innovative School of Applied Arts in Weimar prior to World War I, his architectural designs for theaters, museums and exposition pavilions, and his relationships with Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius and other important figures of the period.
