A broad survey of the flourishing of art and design in Glasgow from 1880 to 1914, this catalogue documents 58 paintings, drawings and prints by 20 Scottish artists (among them James Guthrie, Joseph Crawhall, John Lavery and other members of the "Glasgow Boys" group) along with 50 furniture pieces, ceramic objects, textiles, posters and other decorative art works and design sketches by such figures as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Jessie M. King, Margaret and Frances Macdonald, Jessie Newbery and George Walton. Biographical profiles of the 38 featured artists and individual commentaries on many of the illustrated works are accompanied by three essays discussing the leading painters of the Glasgow School, the collecting activities of the city's late-Victorian industrialists, and the relationship of the Glasgow design style to the aesthetics of the English Arts and Crafts movement and European Modernism.
