Focused on a series of closely related paintings, drawings and etchings produced between 1988 and 1991 by noted American artist Marden (b. 1938) that reflects his interest in the works of Jackson Pollock and his study of the writings of 8th-century Chinese poet Cold Mountain (Han Shan), this catalogue features illustrations of 81 abstract compositions based on loosely interwoven networks of calligraphic lines. A substantial six-part text describes the sources of the Cold Mountain series and discusses its evolution in the context of Marden's artistic and personal concerns.
