Thoroughly surveying politically engaged works produced during the 1980s by noted Polish-born Canadian-American artist Wodiczko (b. 1943), this catalogue documents some 40 temporary, site-specific installations composed of huge photographic images of cultural and political oppression projected onto public buildings and monuments throughout Europe and North America. Numerous reprinted statements by Wodiczko illuminate the objectives underlying the featured projects while four essays provide a critical overview of the artist's career, discussing the evolution of his innovative mobile shelters for the homeless and analyzing his early work in the context of the cultural climate in Poland during the 1970s.
