SIGMAR POLKE. Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1992. 136 pp. (4 foldout) with 84 ills. (59 col.). 28 x 24 cm. ISBN 9050060773 Bilingual in Dutch and English; preface and three of four essays also in German.
Surveys the individualistic oeuvre of prominent German painter Polke (b. 1941) through a presentation of 36 diverse works that reflect his complex intermingling of figurative and abstract elements, including conceptual number and pattern compositions of the 1960s, expressionistic tableaux from the 80s, and recent works in which images appropriated from historical prints are superimposed on abstract grounds. Accompanied by good reproductions of the featured pieces, four brief essays discuss the encyclopedic range of Polke's aesthetic, philosophical and scientific interests, evaluate the role of mathematical principles in his work, and analyze his allegorical painting Frau Herbst und ihre zwei Tochter (1991).
