Providing an extensive review of the broad-ranging decorative oeuvre of renowned Austrian architect and designer Hoffmann (1870-1956), a co-founder with Koloman Moser of the Wiener Werkstatte (1903), this catalogue presents illustrations of some 250 drawings and sketches along with photographs of more than 200 objects (including furniture, glassware, ceramics and textiles) reflecting an innovative synthesis of Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts motifs. Excerpts from a 1911 lecture by Hoffmann describing his artistic objectives accompany two essays (new to the English edition) discussing the distinctive character of his drawings and his dispute with Viennese architect Adolf Loos over the role of ornamentation in design.
