Complementing earlier publications devoted to images of Pompeii (1981; Worldwide 16958) and of the Forum, Colosseum and Palatine Hill (1985; Worldwide 19871), this scholarly catalogue documents with fine reproductions and detailed entries some 200 architectural drawings and watercolors selected from the collections of the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, including renderings of Roman ruins and reconstructed views of important monuments submitted by 23 French architects in conjunction with their studies at the Academie de France in Rome. A discussion of the impact on the architects of archaeological explorations in 19th-century Rome prefaces concise biographical profiles of the featured figures (among them Hector-Martin Lefuel, Victor Baltard and Emile Vaudremer) and individual essays on the 19 sites depicted in their works.
