LEONAERT BRAMER, 1596-1674: A PAINTER OF THE NIGHT. Frima Fox Hofrichter et al. Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art, Marquette University, Milwaukee, 1992. 144 pp. with 121 ills. (11 col.). 28 x 23 cm. LC 92-75634 ISBN 087462908M In English.
Presenting numerous previously unexhibited works from North American collections, this catalogue documents a show of 17 paintings and 40 drawings by Delft artist Bramer, a long-neglected history and genre painter whose treatments of mythological and New Testament subjects (many in nocturnal settings) place his oeuvre outside the mainstream of 17th-century Dutch art. Four introductory essays provide an overview of Bramer's independent career, discuss his exposure to Caravaggism during an extended sojourn in Italy, examine his work in the context of the artistic milieu of Delft and consider documents suggesting he served as Vermeer's teacher.
