A significant examination of 19th-century Italian painting in the context of the social and political upheavals of the Risorgimento, this scholarly catalogue features reproductions and substantial individual discussions of some 100 portraits, landscapes, genre paintings and mythological, religious and historical compositions by such prominent artists as Boldini, Fattori, Hayez, De Nittis and Segantini and by numerous lesser-known figures. Nine essays tracing the rise of regional and national styles in Italian art over the period and the transition from Romanticism to Realism and Impressionism are supplemented by biographies of the more than 60 artists represented in the exhibition.
