Accompanying the first in a series of multi-site biennial exhibitions devoted to new artistic developments in Southern California, this catalogue documents eight diverse shows presenting paintings, photographs, sculptures, video and performance pieces, and installations by some 60 Los Angeles-based artists. Critical essays describing the individual exhibitions are accompanied by a lengthy and wide-ranging discussion of the Los Angeles art world since the 1960s compiled from a "fax correspondence" among LAX project director Edward Leffingwell, artist Fred Fehlau and poet Amy Gerstler.
