Exploring the complex admixture of cultural traditions reflected in the Buddhist art of the ancient Gandhara region from the 4th century B.C. through the 7th century A.D., this scholarly catalogue documents an extensive array of some 220 metal and stone objects drawn primarily from British museums, including coins, vessels, statuettes, relief panels, jewelry and other works which variously incorporate Greek, Indian, Iranian and Central Asian motifs. Introductory texts outlining the historical, religious and artistic contexts of the exhibited works are supplemented by detailed individual commentaries and a series of technical analyses of Gandhara works in metal, stone, clay and glass.
