Thoroughly documents a major exhibition of some 200 artifacts excavated at the site of the ancient Elamite city of Susa (settled ca. 4000 B.C.), including ceramic vessels, terra-cotta figurines, jewelry, monumental sculptures, weapons, inscribed clay tablets and other objects selected to illustrate the city's role as a center of cultural exchange among Near Eastern civilizations over a period of nearly four millennia. Illustrations and detailed descriptions of the featured works are accompanied by more than 35 scholarly essays discussing the art of ancient Iran, the course of excavations at Susa since the late 19th century, the construction and decoration of its temples and palaces, the significance of seals, cuneiform texts and Mesopotamian monuments found at the site and many other aspects of the city's history.
