A thorough study of the career of a lesser-known but significant figure in the history of American Modernist photography, this catalogue documents an exhibition of 112 images produced by Kanaga (1894-1978) from the 1920s through the 50s, including nature studies, urban views and numerous portraits of the poor in the rural South and the cities of the North. A lengthy biographical text discussing Kanaga's varied professional activities, her involvement with the Photo League in New York and her interest in issues of social justice is accompanied by seven brief essays addressing the main themes explored in her work.
