Highlighting the achievements of a pioneering American art pottery, this catalogue presents fine illustrations and individual discussions of nearly 100 ceramic vases produced by the Cincinnati-based Rookwood firm from 1883 to 1930, many of the works distinguished by elegant hand-painted decorations variously incorporating Oriental, Art Nouveau and Art Deco motifs. A detailed essay evaluating Rookwood's development and the primary characteristics of its products is supplemented by an examination of eight notable glaze lines introduced by the firm.
