Documenting an exhibition of some 250 paintings, sculptures, drawings and other works produced from the late 19th century to the 1990s by Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gabriele Munter, Hannah Hoch, Elvira Bach, Hanna Nagel and nearly 80 other chiefly lesser-known artists, this massive catalogue provides a detailed study of the pioneering association of women artists established in Berlin in 1867 and of the achievements and changing status of women throughout the German art world over the period. Illustrations of the featured works and of hundreds of additional pieces accompany 37 substantial essays on topics ranging from the involvement of women artists in the Berliner Sezession and the history of the Verein during the Third Reich to the experiences of postwar women artists in the DDR and the major themes and accomplishments of individual figures such as Kathe Kollwitz, Marianne Werefkin and Jeanne Mammen.
