OP AGNES MARTIN. Barbara Haskell et al. Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 1992. Distributed by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York. 188 pp. with 91 ills. (59 col.). 30 x 22 cm. LC 92-17968 ISBN 0810968177 In English.
Surveying three decades of work by a prominent Canadian-born American artist whose distinctive oeuvre represents the fusion of Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist aesthetics, this catalogue features full-page reproductions of some 65 paintings and drawings produced by Martin (b. 1912) from 1958 to 1990, most composed of meticulously drawn grid patterns rendered in subtle pastel hues. Augmented by a selection of Martin's writings that illuminates her philosophical and aesthetic values, three critical essays examine the independent course of her career, place her work in a broad art historical context, and reassess her reductivist vocabulary from a feminist perspective.
