THE DRAWINGS OF STUART DAVIS: THE AMAZING CONTINUITY. Karen Wilkin and Lewis Kachur. Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago, 1992. Organized by American Federation of Arts, New York. Published in association with Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York. 144 pp. with 124 ills. (34 col.). 26 x 27 cm. LC 92-73191 ISBN 0810932156 In English.
Illuminating the central role of Davis's draughtsmanship in the development of his modernist oeuvre, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of some 100 drawings, watercolors, gouaches and annotated sketchbook sheets by the celebrated American artist (1892-1964), ranging from early realist depictions of urban subjects and Cubist-inspired still lifes of the 1920s to the innovative schematic abstractions of his late career. Two essays trace the evolution of the artist's style as reflected in his drawings and evaluate the complex interplay of textual and purely pictorial elements in his work.
