OP GEORGIA O'KEEFFE & ALFRED STIEGLITZ: TWO LIVES -- A CONVERSATION IN PAINTINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS. Belinda Rathbone et al. Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., 1992. Published in association with HarperCollins Publishers, Inc., New York, and Callaway Editions, Inc., New York. 144 pp. with 107 ills. (34 col.). 28 x 24 cm. LC 92-52595 ISBN 0060168951 In English.
Exploring the reciprocal influences reflected in the works of two pioneering American Modernists, this catalogue juxtaposes 40 photographs by Stieglitz (1864-1946) with 33 paintings, watercolors and drawings by O'Keeffe (1887-1986), most of the works dating from the beginning of their relationship in 1918 through the decade following their 1924 marriage. Three essays examine the impact of the artists' personal and professional alliance on the development of their respective oeuvres, drawing stylistic and thematic parallels between Stieglitz's evocative landscapes, nature studies and portraits and O'Keeffe's lyrical biomorphic abstractions.
