OP TRIOMPHE DU BAROQUE (Triumph of the Baroque). Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, 1991. Europalia 91: Portugal. 520 pp. with 307 col. ills. 30 x 24 cm. In French.
Examining the flourishing of culture in 18th-century Portugal promoted by the lavish patronage of the country's rulers during the period, this substantial catalogue features illustrations and lengthy analyses of some 300 diverse works, including ornate furniture, silver services, liturgical objects, porcelain vessels and royal jewelry as well as paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by native Portuguese and foreign artists. Nine scholarly essays include discussions of such topics as the close links between the Portuguese kings and the Vatican, the dominance of the Baroque style throughout the arts, developments in music and the theater, and the major architectural projects undertaken in the aftermath of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
