Accompanying an exhibition of nearly 300 architectural drawings, scenographic designs, furniture pieces, posters, ceramic, metal and glass objects and a wide variety of other decorative works, this catalogue examines transitional developments in modernist architecture and design (primarily in Germany) during the decade prior to World War I, focusing on the achievements of Peter Behrens, Henry van de Velde, Josef Hoffmann and other noted figures associated with such movements as the Deutsche Werkbund and the Wiener Werkstatte. Six essays include an analysis of major projects undertaken by Van de Velde and Behrens and discussions of trends in painting, industrial design and commercial art during the period.
