OP LORNA SIMPSON: FOR THE SAKE OF THE VIEWER. Beryl J. Wright and Saidiya V. Hartman. Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, 1992. Published in association with Universe, New York. 80 pp. with 29 ills. (13 col.). 21 x 28 cm. LC 92-16056 ISBN 0876636377 In English.
Accompanying the first significant exhibition devoted to the conceptually oriented oeuvre of African American artist Simpson (b. 1960), this catalogue presents a selection of 29 works produced by the photographer since 1985, many composed of brief texts and sequential images of black women whose faces are hidden from the viewer. Two critical essays explore Simpson's subversion of documentary portraiture, discuss the issues of race, gender and sexuality addressed in her works, and explicate her often enigmatic texts.
