An extensive examination of Florentine painters' workshops during the era of Lorenzo the Magnificent (1449-1492), this scholarly catalogue features thorough documentation of nearly 80 paintings and a selection of drawings, prints, textiles and other pieces, including works by such figures as Leonardo, Botticelli, Perugino and Fra Bartolommeo and by numerous lesser-known artists. A general overview of the organization, personnel, business practices and activities of workshops in late 15th-century Florence prefaces ten thematic sections accompanied by essays discussing the familial organization of many workshops, the training of apprentices and their collaboration with master painters, the practice of replicating popular compositions, and the production of devotional and decorative works.
