Features lengthy commentaries and fine reproductions documenting 184 works (many rarely or never before exhibited), including a series of 57 wash studies by Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) depicting themes from La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles en vers; some 60 landscapes, portraits, city views and other drawings by Watteau, Boucher, Greuze, Robert, David, Houel and fourteen other artists of the period; and 68 studies produced by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, Charles-Nicolas Cochin, Hubert-Francois Gravelot, Jean-Michel Moreau and Jean-Francois-Pierre Peyron as illustrations for literary works, catalogues of paintings and other publications. Prefaced by a brief history of the museum's drawings collection, the catalogue includes four texts discussing the featured series by Fragonard, the art of illustration in 18th-century France, and selected drawings by Joseph-Marie Vien and Saint-Aubin.
