THE ANTAGONISTIC LINK: JOAQUIN TORRES-GARCIA, THEO VAN DOESBURG. Institute of Contemporary Art, Amsterdam, 1992. Copyright 1991. 196 pp. with 151 ills. (75 col.). 25 x 17 cm. ISBN 9080096814 In English.
Closely examining the course of an artistic dialogue between Uruguayan modernist Torres-Garcia (1874-1949) and Dutch painter and architect Van Doesburg (1883-1931) during the late 1920s, this catalogue reproduces some 60 paintings, sculptures, drawings and other works by the two artists while also presenting excerpts from their mutual correspondence and other writings that illuminate both their shared and conflicting concerns. Three essays discuss Torres-Garcia's introduction to Van Doesburg's oeuvre in Paris, his individualistic interpretation of Cubist and Constructivist principles, and his influential role in the development of avant-garde movements in Latin America following his return to Montevideo in 1934.
