Examining the influence of mid-15th-century Florentine art on Piero's development, this scholarly catalogue showcases 15 paintings and three sculptures by major figures whose works the renowned Italian artist probably encountered during his sojourn in Florence early in his career, including the six-part Santa Lucia altarpiece by Domenico Veneziano, sculptures by Luca della Robbia, and frescoes and panels by Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Paolo Uccello and Andrea del Castagno. Fine reproductions and extensive discussions of the exhibited works are prefaced by an essay describing the aesthetic issues explored by the progressive Quattrocento Florentine painters and linking Piero's stylistic innovations to the works of the featured artists.
