Documenting a major retrospective of works by Jusepe de Ribera which was mounted in a reduced form at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Worldwide 23792), this catalogue features excellent reproductions and scholarly analyses of 129 paintings, 64 drawings and 16 etchings by the renowned Spanish-born Neapolitan artist, among them 57 paintings and 32 drawings not presented in the New York exhibition. Augmenting six texts also published in the catalogue of the American show are four essays discussing Ribera's Neapolitan patrons, his critical fortunes from the 17th through the 19th century, his paintings for the Certosa di San Martino, and the circumstances surrounding the creation of his celebrated altarpiece for the church of the Convento de las Agustinas Recoletas in Salamanca.
