EXPRESSIONS OF PLACE: THE ART OF WILLIAM STANLEY HASELTINE. Marc Simpson et al. M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 1992. Distributed by Hudson Hills Press, Inc., New York. 226 pp. with 130 ills. (73 col.). 27 x 26 cm. LC 92-7266 ISBN 0884010716 In English.
The first extensive examination of the oeuvre of American painter Haseltine (1835-1900), an artist associated with the Hudson River school who spent most of his career in Europe, this catalogue reproduces 73 paintings and works on paper which range from images of the Massachusetts coastline to atmospheric views of Roman ruins and the Bay of Naples. A highly detailed biographical chronology augments three essays examining Haseltine's early New England seascapes, discussing his 30-year career in Rome, and chronicling the artistic and entrepreneurial pursuits of his four brothers, whose activities mirror the complex relationship between art and commerce at the turn of the century. Paperbound reprint (ISBN 0-8840-1070-8) available from Antique Collectors' Club Fall 2001 at $9.95.
