A scholarly examination of the artistic milieu of late 15th-century Florence and its formative influence on Michelangelo's themes and style, this catalogue presents extensive analyses of two early marble reliefs by the artist along with documentation of 38 sculptures, paintings and drawings by Mantegna, Donatello, Botticelli and other figures active in the city. Individual essays on the featured works are augmented by a text discussing the Classical sculpture garden established by the Medici and its role as a center of artistic study in Florence under Lorenzo the Magnificent (1449-1492).
