Provides a broad-ranging reassessment of the influential achievements of 17th-century artists working in Genoa, documenting an ambitious exhibition comprising 181 paintings by Strozzi, Van Dyck, Castello, Castiglione, Fiasella, Rubens, Vouet and many other artists along with some 30 sculptures and a substantial selection of ceramics, coins, silver, furniture and other decorative objects. Supplemented by detailed analyses of the works and biographical profiles of the artists, the massive catalogue includes 24 essays examining developments in each of the media represented and discussing such topics as sources of patronage in the city, the significance of portraiture during the Baroque period, and the architecture of the two palaces in which the exhibition was held.
